I received an audio copy of this book from the author and narrator in exchange for my honest opinion. I then purchased the Kindle copy to go with it. My views are in no way influenced by the gifting of the audio.This book is definitely on my list of re-reads. While I absolutely enjoyed it, I feel like there was so much to this book that I am going to have to read it, maybe twice more, just to grasp everything. That's not a bad thing. I love books that have so much going on, making them easy to dive back into without being bored the second time around. It did take me a bit to get into this book, just from the sheer amount of information and world-building.
I loved how this story unfolded in layers. Each time I thought I knew what was going on, something new was added. It left me continually guessing what was going to happen next, a definite plus in my book. The same goes for the characters. I enjoyed how they grew throughout the story, changing and sometimes revealing bits of themselves that you didn't know earlier in the story. I wasn't too sure about Lily's character in the beginning but that was quickly resolved. As she continued throughout the story, she became one of my favorites. I also thought Alan was just a pushover in the beginning but that changed, as well. It was nice, as well, to be able to get into the villain's head and really see why he thought everything should work out his way. It always shows great writing if the author is able to make you interested in the villain's story, as well. That definitely happened here.
And the narration! Andrea Emmes, as always, did a spectacular job. I felt like I was dropped into Alan and Lily's world, watching the events unfold along with them. Her pacing was such that I was able to speed the audio up (it's one of my little quirks, don't hate!) and it still sounded natural. And she is one of those narrators who makes it seem effortless to switch voices for the characters, giving each one their own special quality. I had no trouble knowing who was speaking in this book.
This is definitely one book I will be revisiting in 2018, to soak up even more!

This is a very imaginative tale of Allan Young- a young lawyer- and his wannabe fiancee, Lily Thatcher, whiz programmer and undercover NSA agent, as they travel between our world and the land of Zion on a different dimension as they seek to protect both worlds from being taken over by an evil force. As the heroes gradually learn of their powers and understand the challenges they need to overcome, they try to muster forces to triumph over their adversaries on all dimensions. Combining elements of advanced software engineering, biblical references, conspiracy theories, and even dragon lore, this is a very innovative and entertaining take on the fantasy, scifi, and dimensional travel genres that will keep you guessing right to the end
Giving five stars because, well it was a good book and I think this writer has a lot of potential. It really cracked me up in spots, the apocryphal quotes started similarly enough to what you may see in things like the book of Enoch or Jasher but when they started to include warp drive technology I just laughed out loud and went along for the ride. It was a fun ride as a whole; however, the ending (no spoilers) really threw me for a loop. I'd be curious to see where that story is going some day. It was an interesting mixture of technology, gaming, religion, romance and espionage. If you like action filled science fiction just get it and enjoy it.
Spy thriller? Urban fantasy? Biblical fiction? Who knows? After all, it throws everything including the kitchen sink at the reader, all in an overwrought, dialogue-heavy wall of melodrama that never really let's you get to know any characters, let alone discern a coherent plot.
There are super-powerful beings on the loose and a religion-heavy influence with the possible threat of the end of the world, yet there never really feels like much risk amid all the preening, moustache-twirling villainy. It's all over the place and all the soap opera action can't paper over the cracks.
Also, for something supposedly science fantasy, there's very little science in show.
Conquest Rise of the Fifth Horseman is the first book in the Fifth Horseman series. It's a fast-paced fantasy that melds a lot of different concepts fairly successfully.
The story starts with Allan, a corporate lawyer, proposing to his girlfriend of four years, Lily, in a very awkward scene in a restaurant. Lily is an agent for the NSA and though she loves Allan, her job (which he knows nothing about) would interfere in a marriage between them.
As it turns out, neither Allan or Lily are what they seem and I mean that in a metaphysical sense as the reader soon discovers. Mr. Mulder has woven in strands from both the Old and New Testaments, dragons, conspiracy theories, nano technology, myths and legends about such diverse historical figures such as Elijah, Tamerlane, John the Apostle, and Noah to a cohesive adventure story.
Allan and Lily must save Earth from a soul-sucking creature while passing through portals to another world. I admit I was a bit confused about the logistics here, but it doesn't really matter to the story. There is a lot of violence, some gratuitous in my opinion, and I wasn't especially happy with the ending, but I look forward to the next book because, in the main, this was a good story that kept my interest. I recommend it to readers looking for something just a little different from the usual.
